How this pattern works

Some tasks carry a small emotional cost before you even begin: boredom, uncertainty, awkwardness, conflict, embarrassment, or the possibility of bad news. Delaying creates immediate relief, so your brain learns that postponement works in the short term. Unfortunately, the task remains and often becomes heavier. The useful shift is learning to separate “this feels unpleasant” from “I should not start yet.”

One thing to try

Name the feeling you are avoiding in one or two words, then do only the first two minutes of the task while allowing that feeling to be present.
