You can be highly motivated when a task feels self-directed, yet surprisingly resistant when the same action becomes an obligation. Schedules, instructions, reminders, or someone else’s expectations can create an internal pushback that has little to do with the task’s actual difficulty. The useful move is not pretending obligations do not exist. It is recovering choices inside them.
One thing to try
Replace “I have to do this” with three choices you still control: when you start, where you do it, and what method you use.
